saving private ryan

Identify and discuss all of the motifs, themes, and symbols from The Red Badge of Courage as they are used in the film Saving Private Ryan. Include any additional symbols noted in the film. For example, what is the significance of the letter?
Motifs: Light and Dark-is the right thing to do or wrong thing to do, like not killing the soldiers who surrended even tho they killed some of there own guys.

Noise and Silence- one time it took place was when the music was on and no fighting was going on and then the music went off when the germans started to come. another time was when main commander we saw was hit by the tank and everything was quiet, then suddenly the noise of the fighting came back again.

clean and dirty- was when one of the soldiers was killed and his letter he wrote was all bloody, so another soldier took his letter and re-wrote it on clean paper.

youth and maturity- the corporal/translator was a little pussy and wouldn't kill anyone, and probably could have saved many lives if he had killed some people, but he didn't until the end when he killed a german soldier that they should have killed earlier in the movie when he surrendered.

Symbols:
the dead soldier-Wade- represented the saying they said kill one save 10 times that or maybe even 20 times that, it also represents your last thoughts before you die.

the flag-represents what the American soldiers are fighting for and maybe the begining and end of the war

the hand- i think it represented peace at the end because when he died he finally had peace and his hand stopped shaking on the commander.

Themes:
courage-this is a great theme for the movie and book or any thing dealing with war, because you half to have courage to fight and do what a soldier does, like in the movie when they charged at the bunkers with just a few men and no real protection but a gun to shoot back, they were in the wide open

manhood- was a good theme for the translator boy. because he went into the war not being a man, he was still a child and didn't want to kill anyone or be in any combat. i'm sure it is hard being out there, but you are a soldier and need to toughen up and fight, because of him, many guys died, but at the end of the movie he finally grew a pair and killed a guy.
