ch 7
in chapter 7 a lot happens. first tom finds out that gatsby and daisy are in love. this makes tom very upset. i dont really no why though, because he does have an affiar to, so really he is just getting a taste of his own medicine. anyways, they all go out and then tom makes daisy and gatsby go home so show daisy that he isn't scared of gatsby and it isn't hurting him. on the way home gatsby hit myrtle in a hit and run scene. nick figures out it was them that did it, so he found gatsby and accused him of what he did.

ch 3
chapter 3 talks about Gatspy a lot. the reason he is so popular is because he throws so many parties, that are the most amazing parties ever. he never invited anyone, except for nick. he did invite him because they were neighbors. when gatspy and nick run into each other at the party, gatspy says nick looks formilar. they come to the accusation that they fought in the war together. we find out that Gatspy has these parties, but never drinks, nor is he in the middle of the party. he always stays on the outside of it. That night nick ran into jordan baker and they kind of hooked up, and later that night gatspy wanted to talk to jordan. nick took tom's and diaseys advice and started to date jordan, who he knows is a dishonest person.
ch 2
chapter 2 starts out talking about the poor section of town, and has eyes that look like they look down on the whole city. it is a great valley where the cities ashes are dumped. the is where toms lover lives. one day while tom and nick were on the train tom made nick get off with him in this little town and they picked up Myrtle and went to an apartment in New York that Tom has for his affiar. they had a party, and all got drunk. Myrtle wanted a puppy, so tom got her one, and as she was getting more seived up, she got louder and louder. myrtle started to talk about tom's wife after she got her puppy and tom told her to shut up and she wouldn't, so he broke her nose.

THESIS- Henry was a worthless soldier and should have been thrown to the front line.
1st. point- Henry only thought about himself
“So, staggering before the loud soldier, he began: "Yes, yes. I've--I've had an awful time. I've been all over. Way over on th' right. Ter'ble fightin' over there. I had an awful time. I got separated from the reg'ment. Over on th' right, I got shot. In th' head. I never see sech fightin'. Awful time. I don't see how I could a' got separated from th' reg'ment. I got shot, too" (Crane 13. 7).
Henry did what he could to protect his own life and only his own life. I believe this because as in the quote he lies to other soldiers to cover up his mistake of running from the war. This quote is just one of the many times he made up lies. This quote is saying that Henry finally got back to his regiment and said he got lost from his regiment by fighting so hard, and was shot in the head. What really happened was he ran from the battle to save his own life, and then wanted to find out what was going on, so he went to a soldier to find out and got hit in the head by a rifle. All this is explaining how Henry is selfish.
2nd point- Henry let down his country down.
“Destruction threatened him from all points. Directly he began to speed toward the rear in great leaps. His rifle and cap were gone. His unbuttoned coat bulged in the wind. The flap of his cartridge box bobbed wildly, and his canteen, by its slender cord, swung out behind. On his face was all the horror of those things which he imagined” (Crane 6. 23-25).
Throughout this quote it speaks about Henry running from the battles. A soldier that runs is a bad worthless soldier, and really is just a waste of the governments money to train him, feed him, give him weapons, and clothes. All he did was let his country down. At least me as a person, if I hear a soldier didn’t do his job, it lets me down and it does the same to many people all over the country. Doesn’t it just make you wonder how many people do run, and at some point too many people will get scared and we might loose the war. Usually if you loose a war, it’s not a good thing for the loosing opponent. This all starts with one person running from battle, so it was a major mistake Henry did.
3rd point- Henry could have saved many lives if he had stayed and fought.
"What?" he asked. "Where yeh hit?" repeated the tattered man. "Why," began the youth, "I--I--that is--why--I--" He turned away suddenly and slid through the crowd. His brow was heavily flushed, and his fingers were picking nervously at one of his buttons. He bent his head and fastened his eyes studiously upon the button as if it were a little problem” (Crane 8. 43-48)
Even though Henry became a decent soldier towards the end of the book, he still let his men down and pretty much killed some of them. As in the quote, it talks about Henry talking to the tattered man and suddenly slips into a crowd of people, instead of helping the wounded soldier. That soldier might have died because of Henry. Also since Henry ran from battle, there were lives Henry could have saved, only if he would have stayed. Think about it Henry stays and kills maybe 5 guys that would be 5 less guys killing the Union soldiers. Which results in Henry saving lives.

saving private ryan
Identify and discuss all of the motifs, themes, and symbols from The Red Badge of Courage as they are used in the film Saving Private Ryan. Include any additional symbols noted in the film. For example, what is the significance of the letter?
Motifs: Light and Dark-is the right thing to do or wrong thing to do, like not killing the soldiers who surrended even tho they killed some of there own guys.
Noise and Silence- one time it took place was when the music was on and no fighting was going on and then the music went off when the germans started to come. another time was when main commander we saw was hit by the tank and everything was quiet, then suddenly the noise of the fighting came back again.
clean and dirty- was when one of the soldiers was killed and his letter he wrote was all bloody, so another soldier took his letter and re-wrote it on clean paper.
youth and maturity- the corporal/translator was a little pussy and wouldn't kill anyone, and probably could have saved many lives if he had killed some people, but he didn't until the end when he killed a german soldier that they should have killed earlier in the movie when he surrendered.
Symbols:
the dead soldier-Wade- represented the saying they said kill one save 10 times that or maybe even 20 times that, it also represents your last thoughts before you die.
the flag-represents what the American soldiers are fighting for and maybe the begining and end of the war
the hand- i think it represented peace at the end because when he died he finally had peace and his hand stopped shaking on the commander.
Themes:
courage-this is a great theme for the movie and book or any thing dealing with war, because you half to have courage to fight and do what a soldier does, like in the movie when they charged at the bunkers with just a few men and no real protection but a gun to shoot back, they were in the wide open
manhood- was a good theme for the translator boy. because he went into the war not being a man, he was still a child and didn't want to kill anyone or be in any combat. i'm sure it is hard being out there, but you are a soldier and need to toughen up and fight, because of him, many guys died, but at the end of the movie he finally grew a pair and killed a guy.

quiz 2
Henry is referred to as "the youth" and Wilson is referred to as "the loud private." How has each character changed from the beginning of the story to now, specifically in regards to these monikers? Use specific examples from the story to support your answer.
In the story, i think Henry has came to his manhood. he has grown up and grew a pair. he became one of the bravest soldiers and started to enjoy fighting and was not going to back down. Like towards the end of the story he has the flag and also helps capture 4 soldiers of the enemies. he also was right toward the front when they were charging. wilson was known as the loud soldier and became kind of a nice comforting person. he becomes really nice and become good friends with henry. at the begining of the story he was mean and yelled at everyone and at the end he became friends with the ones he yelled at and stuck up for them.

chapter 24
the main character it talks about in chapter 24 is Henry. it starts with the soldiers heading back to the river and henry is still thinking about him running during battle. he still feels guilty. he was finally able to get over it. he wants to go home and tell his stories and is imagining what he would say and how everyone would react. he feels at peace with himself and thinks that he helped make the world a better place. also he is happy that he has met his manhood. he went to the war being a boy and came home a man. my question is i wonder what his mother will say to him once he gets home?
chapter 23
characters:Henry, Wilson, and his regiment. the chapter starts off with a final charge they are going to have and at the fences the enemy started to run and the enemy pretty much were retreiting. henry and wilson saw that the flag bear was injured for the enemy so they both took off after it and wilson was the one who ended up getting it. Henry's and Wilson's regiment even captured 4 soldiers. they all celabrated because i think they have finally won or at least won this battle. my question is what are they going to do with the ones they captured?
Monday, November 24, 2008
chapter 22
characters: henry wilson and soldiers. the chapter starts off with another charge and they start another battle. it is really loud from the firing and then suddenly it becomes quite. then is gets loud again. henry saw men running everywhere. everyone was crazy and didn't know what to do. the youth were not going to back down, but the others started to and the regiments were becoming weak. my question is do they have machine guns yet or not?
chapter 21
the characters are the same wilson and henry. this chapter is after the battle and it is a bunch of soldiers talking about the battle. they said that they fought like thunder, but didn't get the job done, there are just to many of them, but towards the end it talks about how good henry and wilson are at fighting and said they were the best 2 fighters out there. my question is who is really winning? because last chapter is made it seem we were winning and the enemy was backing down.
chapter 20
the characters are the same as before. in chapter 20 it once again talks about the charge and how so many people are being killed. it sure would be a crazy sight to see. anyways it then talks about how the youth have a flag and feel proud to have it. they dont want to share it and push each other for it. toward the end of the chapter they find out the enemy doesn't do well when charged at and it gave the soldiers a new confidence. my question is what is henry doing? it doesn't really say anything about him at all.
chapter 19
characters: Henry and soldiers. the chapter starts off with them charging and they say it seems like that they have ran for miles. they start to yell and scream like banjovies and go crazy. it sounds like fun to me! anyways it only talks about the charge and the youth even go in it. it took a little bit for them to get use to it but they got use to it and went right along. they got to the woods and very running through the trees shooting and also hiding behind trees. it sounds like it would be a lot of fun, and expecially if they were using paintball guns. my question is what would it be like charging someone with a gun shooting at you? it sounds kind of fun and i bet a lot of adreniline would be rushing.
chapter 18
characters: Henry Wilson, and Jimmie Roger. the chapter starts off during a battle and Jimmie gets shot and is yelling. everyone is scared to go to him, so a couple of the youth leave to go get water. then it goes into the fighting again and how there are all kinds of injured soldiers crawling around in the woods. then it goes to them getting ready to charge and all the soldiers are saying no one is going to live and the youth are ready to go charge. my question is do you think Henry is going to be shot?
chapter 17
the character are still the same. it starts off with the soldiers talking about how they are always on the move and never have time to just sit and rest physically. they were talking about something that they are being pushed back and pretty soon they will be pushed right into water. but they were fighting and there faces were black from the burned power and were fighting very fierce. there commander was going back and forth yelling at the soldiers and laughing too. he must have been crazy! my question is the youth still running during battle or not?
chapter 16
the characters are the same as before. this chapter start off by the youth argueing with the older more experienced soldiers. they were argueing about the war. the older ones thought that they were ahead and the younger ones thought that they weren't ahead. pretty much the younger soldiers were being cocky and acting like they know everything. later the youth were by themselves and started talking among themselves about how they are treated so badly. they said they were treated like kittens just moved were every with no choice in the matter. it also talks about how henry is finally getting a little braver. my question is who really is winning the war?
chapter 15
the characters in chapter 15 are the same as before. the chapter starts out by henry having the yellow envelope of wilson. it has the letter he wrote to his family, and henry is suppose to give it to wilsons family if he gets killed. henry was going to talk to wilson about it so he called his name, but then decided not to talk about it, so he change the subject. it seems henry is getting to be good at changing the subject. my question is why does wilson think he is going to die or is the letter just in case and what would happen if henry was killed?
chapter 14
The characters in this chapter are the same characters as in 13. In chapter 14 Henry wakes up from the long night starts talking with all the other soldiers about the fighting thats going on. the conversation turns on Henry and makes him uncomfortable, because he knows he ran, but didn't want the other soldiers to know that, so he change the conversation. he said that jim conklin was killed in the battle and everyone starts to talk about him. so henry got lucky on not letting them know he ran during battle. my question is how does henry know jim was killed or is he making it up.
chapter 13
The characters in chapter 13 are Henry, Wilson, and his regiment. It starts of with Henry getting back to his regiment and everyone was surprised to see him, because they thought he was dead. they began to talk and Henry tells them he was shot in the head, which is really the place he got hit, but anyways they got him all fixed up and then Wilson gave him is blanket to sleep on for the night and made him sleep on it and was not going to argue about it. my question is wouldn't the place he got hit, not look like a gun shot wound?

chapter 12
The characters in this chapter are a nice soldier and Henry. It starts off by saying they lost the battle, and they enemy kept pushing them back farther and farther, and pretty soon he thinks they will just swallow them or kill them all. henry was trying to figure out what was going on, so he tried to ask a soldier, but instead he got hit in the head by a rifle. Henry didn't know what was going on since he ran. Everyone was retreating now and everyone seemed to be crazy. He was hit pretty hard and couldn't walk very well, so a soldier walking along helped him out and brought him to hes regiment. My question is who was the nice soldier who helped Henry?
Quiz
1. What does the title of this book mean? Be specific in your response, noting Henry's comments.
The Red Badge of courage is something the ingured men get when they are fighting. Henry admires the men with the Red Badge and it gives him incouragement to fight and be all who he can be. The men with the Red Badge show how brave they are and Henry wants to be like them, but needs to find it in him to do some couragous things. The wounded men are always the ones talking to him and getting him to be couragous, so that is why he admires the men with the Red Badge or Courage.
2. What is the importance of the tattered man? What does he represent?
The importance of the tattered man was he was shot 2 times, but yet was still trying to help the other soldiers. He is a very strong and couragous man, that we all should be like. The tattered man helped Henry out a lot and was one of the guys who influenced Henry to go and be a brave soldier, and make him want to be all he can be. I think he kind of represnts Jesus because he wanted everyone to follow him and he died on the cross, and was like a tattered man. He was also a very brave and Couragous person who everyone should be like.
3. What role does Henry's mother play while he is away from her?
Henry's mom plays the role of the farmer back at home. His father must be gone or dead because it doesn't talk anything about him. She is also a very worried mother, she didn't aprove of Henry going to the war, and now has to worry about loosing her oldest son and maybe only son. That is another reason she wanted Henry to stay home, because she needed help on the farm.
4. How does Henry use the squirrel to justify his actions?
Henry uses the squirrel to show his actions by saying when danger is around, the squirrel doesn't even think about staying where he is, the squirrel will run for its life until it finds safty. it won't just stay in one spot and keep itself in danger. This is just like Henry, he ran when the battle was getting tough and he was being put in danger.

chapter 11
In chapter 11 the characters are the loud soldier, Henry, and the soldiers. it starts off with Henry waking up and hearing the booming sounds of the battle growing louder. the roads were full and they said that they were retreating. it made a lot of the youth feel comforted, but the battles are not over. now henry has been talking to some soldiers and doesn't want everyone to think bad about him. he want to go to the front of the line, but he says he doesn't have his rifle. All the way till the end of the book it talks about henry not wanting all the soldiers too know him as the one who runs during battle. my question is why doesn't he get a gun from a dead soldier, cause i'm sure there are many guns just laying around.
chapter 10
The characters in chapter 7 are Henry, a tattered man, and the loud soldier. As in the chapter before henry is wandering around and is still trying to think of some excuse or explanation of why he is not fighting. he doesn't think of anything, and then a tattered man starts talking to him. for the rest of the chapter henry and the tattered man talk about various things. my question is where all is the tattered man hurt?
chapter 9
In chapter 9 the characters it talks about are Henry, the tall soldier, an injured soldier, and many other soldiers. This chapter starts out with Henry really thinking that running from the battle line was wrong. Finally he gets himself to go to the battle line, but the soldiers were retreating, and wouldn't tell him what was going on. Finally he saw the tall soldier, Jim, who was in his regiment. Jim was happy to see Henry, because he thought he was dead, and was worried. Jim and Henry talked and Henry felt bad, but couldn't tell Jim what he did. They keep on talking and Jim tell Henry one thing that scares him the most, and that was getting run over by the artillery, and then he has to leave and doesn't want to talk anymore. My question is why doesn't Henry just do some brave stuff so he can make up a little of the things he did wrong?
chapter 8
In chapter 8 the main characters it talks about is Henry, Johnson, and the soldiers. In chapter 8 the Henry hears the sounds of batttle again he thought about going, but was a coward and stayed back and tried to think of some excuse he could tell the soldiers when they come back. While he was walking around thinking of an excuse an injured man started talking to Henry and tried making a conversation with him. The injured man started talking about how he never ran from the battle line, and this made Henry half to leave, because he knows what he did and is not proud of it anymore. So Henry slipped through the crowd and the injured soldier was astonished. My question is why doesn't Henry go back to the battle line or do something other than try and make some excuse up, because you can't make an excuse up for leaving the battle line, soldiers will fight even if they can't walk. Just because your scared is no excuse.
chapter 7
In chapter 7 the only characters that i remember were in it were an injured soldier, and Henry. The chapter is mainly about how all the soldiers are still in awe that they won and then it talks about the death of Jim. Jim died and Henry saw him right before he died. Henry was amazed that Jim was able to run after he was injured. From there on it talks about Henry talking to a soldier who was being nice to him, and then he had to run away from the soldier, because henry knows he did something bad. So Henry is argueing with himself and tries to make it seem that what he did was ok, but it deffently was not alright. I think the thing he did wrong was he ran away from the battle line to save himself, but im not for sure, because it doesn't make it very clear. My question is where does Henry hide so he sees all the stuff happening but not get shot?

chapter 6
The characters in chapter 6 are Smithers, Henry, Jons, Tompkins, and Taylor. Once again another battle starts again just like the last 2 chapters, only this time many more enemy soldiers were charging toward them. Many soldiers on Henry's side took off running because they didn't think they were going to win the battle and didn't want to be killed. I think Henry was also one who took off running, but im not sure, because it still talks about him seeing everything thats going on, but also was talking about how all the stuff thats on his was clanking all over while he was running, so i really don't know what happened with him. toward the end of the book they ended up holding the enemy off and made them turn and run the other direction, just like the last 2 chapters. this guys who wrote the book really could have put chapters 4, 5, and 6 all in one chapter and just made it more interesting and a little longer, because repeating the same thing 3 chapters in a row gets really old fast. My questions is like i said before, did Henry run or not?
chapter 5
The characters in chapter 5 are Henry, Youth, and the Generals. The chapter starts off with another battle, but this time they are waiting for the enemy to charge at them, which is happening during the begining of the chapter. The General told them to hold fire till the enemy was close enough to kill. Thats what they did and later in the day, they were able to stop the rage of the enemy and they made them turn around and run. Henry and the other soldiers cheered and yelled, "We've held um back." My question for this chapter is why don't they talk about they fighting, like people getting shot and make it more graphic and more interesting? They just talks about Henry's feelings it seems and it doesn't even do that very good. This book just keeps geting more boring and more boring and makes it hard to understand whats going.
chapter 4
In chpater 4 there are a few new characters. They are Perry, Carrott, Hannises, Hasbrouck, Bill, Saunders, and the ones who know from before Henry, youth, and the soldiers. Right now during this chapter a battle is going on and it is mainly talking about hom many people are getting ingured. It is also talking about a few people that are running away during the fighting or are just saying they are ingured, so they go to the hospital and dont need to fight. I dont really get what is all going on towards the end of chapter 4 bacause it talks about it being like a flood and everyone seems to be deaf, so did they loose the battle, because i thought they won the battle, and then they should be cheering and all happy right?

chapter 3
In chapter 3 the characters are still the same people as chapter 2. this chapter starts out by sleeping close to the enemy and many soldiers were afriad they might get killed in their sleep. the next morning soldiers were on their way to fight and they heard guns firing. many were excited and started to run to where everyone else was going. Once Henry got their, he saw the battle field and said it didn't look like he expected, and nothing was how he expected. during the day he started to remember the cows he hated when he was home, but now misses them and misses his mother. he wants to go home and doesn't think he is where he is suppose to be. My question is why is the loud soldier saying he is going to die, is he shot already or what is going on?
chapter 2
The charaters in chapter 2 are Henry, the tall soldier, the loud soldier, and the youth. This chapter starts off by talking about how a soldier thought they were going to war the night before and the next morning they found out it wasn't true and everyone was up set with the soldier who said this. Again later in the day someone said they were going to be moving to go fight the next day. this made Henry start to with he wasn't in the war and started to panick and was pacing back and forth. he was scared to go to war and was also worried he would run when they started to fight, and he didn't want to. the questions i have for this chapter is why are they so worried they might run, because if you want to be in the army and go to war you know what you half to to and fulfill what you said you would do right?
chapter 1
In the first chapter the main characters it talks about are the soldiers, Henry (the one the book is mainly about), the loud soldier, the tall soldier (Jim), the youth, and his mother. The book starts off with soldiers getting ready for war and then it goes into Henry trying to get his mother to give him a chance to go into the army. His mother didn't want him to go into the army but finally she had no choice to let him go, so he headed off to training. He went through many drills and learned about the war. The question I have for this chapter is the youth all the young guys at the training camp or what?
